The Social Evil of Eve Teasing

Date: 26 December posted by adminon

EVE-TEASING is a rampant social evil. It is all pervasive — beaches, roads, cinema halls, buses and sadly even in educational institutions. When eve-teasing persists even inside educational institutions, one can obviously infer that even the educated youth don’t necessarily desist from indulging in this uncouth behavior. The issue always surfaces when something prominent happens. Public memory happens to be short and soon things return to the usual anarchy and we accept the fact that `nothing much can be done.’

Eve-teasing is not a victimless crime as it appears on paper. It has resulted in deaths, and when it goes unchecked could lead to public humiliation of women even in broad daylight. Eve-teasing is a typical social crime, where the perpetrators and victims are ordinary people. There is no easy way of rounding up everyone concerned and settling the issue. Schools and colleges could easily discipline students for such activities on campus, but this only induces them to indulge in such acts outside campus.

Innumerable movies show that eve-teasing eventually `wins’ a girl’s attention. It is unnecessarily glorified by movies, although movie makers may argue that it is a classical `chicken and egg’ situation. One must admit that eve-teasing can most certainly be perpetuated easily by its continued glorification in movies.

Changing this behavior is easier said than done. However, if things are left alone, they could hardly get better. A behavioral change is the only lasting solution to this problem. This requires an extensive public education aimed at every section of society at large. In a recent survey ,overwhelming number of girls said that they had to face eve teasing in their schools/colleges. Unfortunately many Muslim youth have also adopted this disgraceful way of Eve Teasing/ following girls in the streets. Remember that Islam has taught us to respect our womenfolk  and fear Allah regarding them as Prophet(peace be upon him) mentioned in his Last Khattab to the Ummah.Casting lustful glance at women is forbidden and can lead to grave consequences in the Hereafter.

Eyes commit adultery through Lustful Gazing

Lustful gaze [an-nazar bi’sh-shahwa],plants the seeds of sin in the hearts.

In a hadith narrated by Imam Bukhari (RA),Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam)  has said, “a Lustful glance is the fornication/adultery of the eyes.” ►(Bukhari vol. 2 pg. 923)

The person who casts lustful glances and indulges in any form of fornication/adultery can never even dream of becoming a wali unless they sincerely repent from this evil.

In another hadith, Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) is reported to have said, “May the curse of Allah be on the one who looks lustfully and on the one who is looked at with lust.” ►(Mishkaat, Book of Nikah)

In the above mentioned hadith, Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) cursed both the person who casts lustful gazes and the one who is gazed at due to not adopting proper hijab etc.Allah Ta’ala has declared in a hadeeth qudsi, “Verily the lustful glance is a poisonous arrow from the arrows of shaytan. Whoever leaves the casting of lustful glances out of My fear, I will give him in return such Iman, the sweetness of which he will taste and feel in his heart.” ►(Kanz-ul-’Ummaal Vol. 5 pg. 328)

Muhammad Ghazali(Rehmatullahi Alaih) says, “Anyone filling his eyes with Haraam will have them filled with fire on the day of judgement”.►(Mukashifa-tul-Quloob, P10, Dar-ul-Kutubul Ilmiyyyah Beirut)

What can lustful glancing lead to in the hereafter

The famous hadith scholar and great Shafi’i saint Honourable Shaykh Jalal-ud-din Suyuti Shafi’i  has stated,“The blessed Prophet(peace be upon him) saw people with nails hammered into their eyes and ears. He was informed that, ‘They watched what you do not watch and they listened to what you do not listen to.’” ►(Sharah-us Dudur, p. 171)

Imam Muhammad Ghazali has stated,“Anyone who fills his eyes with haram [i.e. sees what is forbidden],his eyes will be filled with fire on the Day of Judgement.” ►(Mukashifatul-Qulub, p. 10)

Brothers and sisters, Beware! Don’t be deceived by Satan !You still have a chance, repent sincerely and tread on a life of Sunnah.

Rebuke of Hazrat Usman(Radiyallahu Anhu) for casting Lustful Gaze

Someone who was staring at a woman’s leg walked into the presence of Uthman ibn ‘Affan, who said, “Do people walk in here with the marks of adultery (zina) upon their eyes?”

And he asked ‘Uthman, “Is there revelation after the Qur’an?”

and he answered, “No, rather true spiritual vision (firasa).”

He  then did Tawba at the  hands of Hadrat Usman(Radiyallahu anhu) ►{Muhib at-Tabari in his Riyad an-Nadira and others}

Abu Sa’id al-Khudri reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:“Be wary of the spiritual vision (firasa) of the believer, for indeed he sees by the Light of Allah.”►{Tirmidhi (#3052, Tafsir of Q15:75), Tabarani in his Mu’jam al-Kabir (8:121 #7497),

Lustful Gaze became a cause of Loosing Iman

Sayyīdunā ‘Abdullāĥ bin Ahmad Mūażżin says, ‘I was busy in doing tawaf  of the Ka’baĥ when I saw a person who was holding onto the cover of the Ka’baĥ and kept on repeating this Du’ā, ‘Oh Allāĥ Let me depart from this world as a Muslim.’

I asked him, ‘Why don’t you make any other Du’ā besides this?’

He said, ‘I had two brothers. My eldest brother used to given Ażān in the Masjid free of charge for 40 years.

At the time of his death, he asked for the Holy Qur’an. We gave him a copy of the Qur’an thinking that he would gain blessings from it but he held the Qur’an and said, ‘All of you be witnesses that I am expressing my disgust with all my belief in, and all the rules of the Qur’an and I am accepting Christianity’. (May Allah forbid)

Then he died.My other brother gave Ażān in the Masjid for 30 years free of charge but in the end he also died a Christian. Therefore, I am very worried about my end. This is why I keep making Causes for a bad EndDu’ā for a good death (with Imān).

’ Sayyīdunā ‘Abdullāĥ bin Aḥmad Mūażżin inquired, ‘After all what sinful activities were your brothers involved in?’

The man replied, ‘They showed interest in females (Na-Mahram)) and would look lustfully at young boys.’► (Roūd-ul-Fāiq, P17, Dar-ul-Kutub-ul-‘Ilmiyyaĥ)

Respect other Womenfolk as you would want others to respect your women

Islam commands men to respect other women just like they  would want women of their household to be respected. Here is a incident from life of Prophet Muhammad(Peace be upon him). Men are commanded to respect women just like they  would want women of their household to be respected. Here is a incident from life of Prophet Muhammad(Peace be upon him). One day, a young man (apparently Julaybib) asked Allah’s Messenger(Peace be upon him) for permission to fornicate, since he could not restrain himself. Those who were present reacted in various ways. Some scoffed at him, others pulled his robe, and still others readied themselves to hit him. But the compassionate Prophet(peace be upon him) drew him near and engaged him in conversation.

He began by asking him:“Would you let someone do this with your mother?” to which the young man replied: “My mother and father be your ransom,O God’s Messenger, I don’t agree with that.”The Prophet(peace be upon him) said:“Naturally, no one agrees that his mother should be a party in such a disgraceful act.” He then continued asking Julaybib the same question, but substituting daughter, wife, sister, and aunt for mother. Every time Julaybib replied that he would not agree to such an act. By the end of this conversation, Julaybib had lost all desire to fornicate. But Allah’s Messenger(Peace be upon him) concluded this “spiritual operation” with a supplication. Placing his hand on Julaybib’s chest, he prayed: “O God, forgive him, purify his heart, and maintain his chastity.” Julaybib became a model of chastity. Some time later he married through the intermediation of Allah’s Messenger(peace be upon him)...►{Ibn Hanbal, 5:256-57}

Sunnah of Lowering gaze while walking

Sulayman ibn Yasar related from Abu Sa’id al-Khudri that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “Beware of sitting in the roadways.”

They said, “Messenger of Allah. we must have places where we can sit and talk together.”

The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “If you must sit there, then give the roadway its rights.”

They asked, “What are the rights of the roadway, Messenger of Allah?”

He said, “Lowering the eye, refraining from causing annoyance, returning the greeting, commanding the right and forbidding the wrong.”
