Unlawfulness of hurting birds in Islam

MANY Muslims appear to have a callous attitude where dealing with animals is concerned giving the impression that maybe their religion has no consideration for animals. However, when we examine the Quran and hadith, we are pleasantly surprised to find that the opposite is true. Islam indeed places much importance on animals and on providing for them in a caring manner.  Here is a hadith about unlawfulness of hurting birds which shows the Mercy of the Prophet(Peace be upon him) to the creation of Almighty Allah.

‘Abdullah reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, stopped in a place and then someone took a bird’s eggs and  the bird began to beat its wings around the head of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.

 He asked, “Which of you has taken its eggs?”

A man said, “Messenger of Allah, I have taken its eggs.”

The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him said“RETURN THEM OUT OF MERCY TO THE BIRD”

{Reported by Imam Bukhari in Al -Adab Al-Mufrad,Hadith # 382}

 Hazrat ‘Umar(Radiyallahu Anhu) was heard to say, “Anyone who does not show mercy will not be

shown mercy. Anyone who does not forgive will not be forgiven. Anyone who does not turn in repentance will not be turned to nor will he be protected or guarded.”
